The Right Device for You

There are a variety of device options for Northeastern Teams users. Get an overview of the devices available for departments to purchase in MyMarketplace and see if one will meet your specific needs. A device is not required to use Microsoft Teams calls.

Whether you are working remotely or on campus, your university phone line will function in Microsoft Teams.  This flexibility includes options to set up new online call functions, voicemail, voicemail to email, call routing/forwarding, and call delegation.

Microsoft Teams calls is the easy way to have call functionality at your fingertips through the Microsoft Teams application on desktop, mobile, or through a web browser client.  Here are some common Microsoft Teams calls questions.

What is Microsoft Teams calls?

Microsoft Teams calls, commonly referred to as VoIP (Voice over internet protocol), lets you access phone services and make calls over the internet through Microsoft Teams.

How do I use Teams calls?

Northeastern uses Microsoft Teams Voice Over IP (VoIP) as a modern calling solution that replaces the old telephone system. View this article for more information from Microsoft on how to set-up and use calls in Teams. 

Will my phone line work in Microsoft Teams calls?

The universitywide phone line transition was concluded in March 2021. Most individual and department lines were migrated to now be used under the “Calls” tab in Microsoft Teams.  

Phones and Devices

Will my university number or extension work in Microsoft Teams?

Yes, as a part of the adoption to Microsoft Teams calls, existing university numbers were migrated to Microsoft Teams calls. To view your number, in Teams select the call button and above the dial pad, your Teams calling number will be displayed.

Will old physical desk phones still work?

If your number was migrated to Microsoft Teams, your old desk phone will not be operational and will no longer have a dial tone.  Please contact your department for coordinating the recycling of old desk phones and power cables.

Do I need a headset or device to make and receive calls?
No, one of the mobile first features of Microsoft Teams is the ability to make and receive calls from anywhere and without add-on devices. However, headsets, headphones, or speaker devices can assist in call volume, clarity, or to provide enhanced call functionality in various office or mobile work settings.
I own a pair of personal headphones, can I use them?

Yes, any headphones, speakers, or wireless earbuds that can be successfully connected to devices using Microsoft Teams can be used. Personal devices may have connectivity issues, so Teams-certified devices are recommended.

I have a university issued mobile phone, will that work on Teams too?

Yes, Downloading and logging in to the Microsoft Teams application will enable you to make and receive calls in Microsoft Teams in the application. But, with Teams calls functionality, call forwarding is an option for any phone line. 

Call Functions

If someone calls me, how do I answer it?

All calls will be managed through the calls button in Microsoft Teams.  You will receive a notification that you are being called through your Teams app and can choose to accept, deny, or forward the call.

How do I access my voicemail?

In Microsoft Teams, under the calls tab, select the voicemail option to view voicemails and calls.  Voicemails in Teams can be listened to or read through automatic voicemail transcription.  You can check your voicemail anywhere that you are connected to Teams.

Can I make emergency calls in Microsoft Teams?

Yes, In Microsoft Teams calls if you have an emergency, simply dial 911. Please remember to give your name and location to assist emergency services.
